Nutshell –
I was a bit worried before buying this as some people had mentioned in their reviews that they received poor-quality (i.e. rip-off) versions of the game. I carefully read through the reviews and question-and-answer section and chose to order the game through Zatu Games. I have played the game many times before so knew what quality to expect and this was just perfect. Thanks, Zatu Games!

I have multiple variants of Catan. I didn’t even realize that this version existed until I was looking up a rule and found a posting for the first edition. I saw that the second edition was on Amazon and I ordered it last week. It arrived a couple of days ago and I played it last night. The second edition fixes the problems of the first edition in terms of fragile pieces and stickers.
Build quality is phenomenal. I would much rather pay $100+ for a game with quality pieces than something cheaply made. It builds on the concepts of the original Catan, but it is a fully new game – not a re-skinning. The way resources are generated, concepts of build/trade are the same. Rest of game is different.
Multiple ways of getting victory points, so multiple strategies. You do not get blocked like in original Catan. No roads or seaways to build. It was really exciting to build ships and send them off. Next time we play we will do the variant that doesn’t disclose the solar system/empty space until you explore – excited!

Ahhhhh catan. Where the losers get frustrated and the winners are rich and full of gluttony. This game can make or break family bonds. Trade with a specific family member you really like. Or make an enemy with your ever so loving black sheep family member. The choice is yours to make. Just remember the name of the game, earn your resources and trade others you dont need. Build your way up and block the paths of your foes. Create city’s and earn double the yeild. Beware of the robber for your yeild he will shield.

My 5 year old loves board games and has watched the grown ups play Settlers of CATAN for a while now so we thought we would introduce him to the junior version.
He understood the game mechanics straight away and loves playing it.
The theme is pirate so the resources are a little different from the adult version, but it still incorporates most of it’s gameplay such as the ‘robber’ which in this case is a ‘captain’ and instead of building roads and cities you build ships and lairs or trade for Coco the Parrot tiles which is like the Development Cards.
I wish it would give you the option of where to place your first lair and ship though as this is one of the main strategies in Settlers of CATAN and I don’t think it would’ve made it too hard for juniors.
Overall, there’s not much room for strategy planning as much of it is down to luck but I guess as a junior game for my 5 year old, will do now.
I expect he will outgrow it by the time he’s 7 though and move onto the proper game, but it is a great introductory game for him nevertheless.

A great addition to the base game, and while it seems like a small addition and is the lightest expansion in comparison, it does change the game up and makes it more dynamic as well as offering 8 different scenarios to set your board up and 1 where it’s completely up to you instead of the small island you’re stuck on in the base game, which freshens up the game a lot if you were bored by the recurring theme of regular Catan.
It’s not only a good setting stone to other expansions, as this is the easiest to grasp, if you desire it’s also the best expansion to combine with another, most commonly with Cities & Knights, which in terms of added gameplay it adds the most depth and strategy (and with it complexity making it a bit too much for a family game, so know what you’re getting into).
All in all, a fresh of breath air if you’ve grown stale of regular Catan and want more, but not that much more you’re overwhelmed, this little thing adds a lot to your games of Catan.

This is one of the best games ever. It is identical to the larger version in terms of game play although it’s actually BETTER because it includes a 2 player add on version which works pretty well and is still fun. Of all the travel games I have played this one is the best. It is so compact but still sturdy and works in the wind which is important in Lanzarote where I was! The pieces on the board are pegged so don’t move once placed and the pieces are all kept inside the hexaganol board so can’t go anywhere. We actually bought this as our first Catan board rather than the big one 1st. Funnily enough we since bought the big full size version and prefer this travel one.
